Cashback sites
A cashback site is paid a commission when you click through it to a shop and buy. It passes that commission back to you.
- Click through the cashback site to the shop before every order. Each order needs its own click.
- It can take up to 7 days to show as pending. The shop then checks the order (returns cancel it), and the site waits to be paid: on average 1 to 3 months before it is payable.
- Tracking runs on cookies. Ad blockers, VPNs and strict privacy settings can stop it, so pause them while you buy.
- A voucher code the cashback site didn't list can void the cashback. If an order hasn't tracked after 7 days, send a missing cashback claim.
- Cashback is on top of what your card pays: pay with the card you already hold that pays most at that shop.

Loyalty stacking
Loyalty points and card rewards are separate, so you get both: scan the loyalty card, then pay with your best card.
- Scan first, then tap. The loyalty scheme pays on what you spend; your card pays on the same spend.
- Clubcard: 1 point per £1, worth 1p. Tesco Fuel: 1 point per 2 litres instead. £1.50 of vouchers swaps for 300 Virgin Points.
- Nectar: 1 point per £1, 500 points = £2.50. Sainsbury's fuel: 1 point per litre. 400 Nectar points convert to 250 Avios.
- Morrisons More: 5 points per item, 5,000 points = £5. Paid per item, not per pound, so we can't put a figure on this basket.
- Boots Advantage: 3 points per £1, worth 1p each. Points are worth 1p each to spend at Boots.
- Superdrug Health & Beautycard: 1 point per £1, worth 1p.
- Member prices (Clubcard Prices, Nectar Prices) need the card or app scanned too. They lower the price; they don't replace your card's reward.

Gift-card stacking, explained
Some shoppers buy a shop's own gift card first, then spend it in that shop, to collect a reward twice.
- How it works: you get money back when you buy the gift card (a bonus, a discount, or cashback paid as a gift card), then scan your loyalty card when you spend it.
- Some cashback sites let you take your cashback as a shop gift card with a bonus on top, instead of a bank transfer.
- Check your card's terms before buying gift cards with it: some cards don't pay rewards on gift-card purchases.
- Gift cards expire. A John Lewis or Waitrose card lasts 24 months, and checking the balance restarts that clock.
- Only buy a gift card for a shop you'll use soon, and keep the receipt.

Delay Repay and train compensation
Delay Repay is a national scheme: if your train is late, you can claim part or all of your fare back, whatever the reason for the delay.
- Claim from the train company whose train delayed you, on its own website. National Rail lists every company's claim page.
- The delay is measured at your destination, against the timetable published in advance.
- Avanti West Coast, for example, pays from 15 minutes late: 25% of a single for 15 to 29 minutes, 50% for 30 to 59, and 100% for an hour or more. Other companies' bands are on their own pages.
- Claims must reach the company within 28 days of the journey. Keep your ticket or e-ticket.
- Some companies pay automatically if you booked Advance tickets direct and opted in.

Flight delay compensation (UK261)
Under UK law, airlines pay fixed compensation when you reach your destination more than three hours late, unless the delay was outside their control.
- Flights under 1,500 km (Glasgow to Amsterdam): £220 per person.
- 1,500 to 3,500 km (East Midlands to Marrakesh): £350 per person.
- Over 3,500 km (London to New York): £260 if you arrive 3 to 4 hours late, £520 if more than 4 hours.
- If the delay was caused by 'extraordinary circumstances' outside the airline's control, there's no compensation.
- Whatever the cause, a delay of 2 hours or more (short flights) means the airline owes you care: food and drink, two calls or emails, and a hotel if you're stuck overnight. Keep itemised receipts if you pay yourself.
- Claim from the airline directly; you don't need a claims company.

Marriage Allowance and tax refunds
Two government ways to get tax back that many people never claim.
- Marriage Allowance: if you earn less than your Personal Allowance (usually £12,570), you can transfer £1,260 of it to your husband, wife or civil partner. That cuts their tax by up to £252 a year.
- You can backdate a Marriage Allowance claim to 6 April 2022 for any year you were eligible. Claim on gov.uk; it's free.
- Tax refunds: gov.uk's checker tells you how to claim if you paid too much tax on pay, job expenses (working from home, fuel, work clothing or tools), savings interest or a redundancy payment.
- You never need to pay a company to claim either of these.

Price-match and price-drop policies
Some big retailers refund the difference if a price drops or you find it cheaper soon after you buy.
- John Lewis: within 7 days of your order, if one of its 25 named competitors sells the identical item for less, or John Lewis drops its own price, ask for a refund of the difference. Clearance, multi-buys, member prices and codes don't count.
- Currys: matches any UK retailer's price on an identical in-stock item, before you buy or up to 7 days after. Marketplace sellers, membership and loyalty prices don't count.
- Tesco and Sainsbury's: Aldi Price Match on selected products, with Aldi prices checked twice a week. Not in Northern Ireland.
